W.F. Fisher and Son Inc.

Our story begins in the 1930s with Walter F. Fisher. Walter began his career as a Wayne Feed salesman in the 1930s, serving local New Jersey farmers. After a few years, he devised a plan to solicit orders from area farmers and breeders and buy train carloads of various feeds. When the box cars arrived, farmers would descend on the local train station and pick up their orders. After a few carloads of feed, Walter recognized that he could better serve customers by delivering the feed directly to the farms himself. He purchased a truck, leased a small warehouse near the Bound Brook train station, and incorporated W. F. Fisher and Son in 1955.

As the 1950s progressed, central New Jersey rapidly changed, with suburban developments and corporate campuses replacing farms. Major pharmaceutical companies moved their research facilities into the area, including Johnson & Johnson, E.R. Squibb and Son, Sandoz, Merck, Bristol Myers, and Ciba-Geigy. Each facility was engaged in laboratory animal science as they sought treatments and cures for diseases.

Meanwhile, John J. Sabine Sr. was employed by Agway as regional sales manager for the newly developed Agway line of laboratory animal feed and was developing a close relationship with the Fisher family. In 1966, Mr. Fisher, recognizing Mr. Sabine’s knowledge of and contacts in the research industry, hired him to grow Fisher’s footprint in the market. Eventually, W.F. Fisher and Son added additional lines of lab animal diets and bedding and expanded into the New York market.

When Walter Fisher retired in 1966, John Sabine purchased the company, with a deep commitment to keeping it family-owned and operated. And he did! Fast forward to today, and the current generation of the Sabine family continues to grow the business. It has added enrichment, disinfectants, zoo and aquarium products, PPE and more to ensure continued growth and excellent customer service.
